Teddington Raptors U10 v. Old Coulsdon Colts U10
1 - 0
19/01/2019 Bushy Park
It was third time lucky for the Raptors who have drawn their previous two meetings against Old Couldson Colts. Matches against this team have always been incredibly close but today the Raptors did just enough to deserve the win. Last week the Raptors played a great passing game pleasing on the eye. Today was a combative scrap against a large and physical team who had a couple of players that looked like U13 Rugby prop forwards!
The first half wasn’t pretty, but both teams gave 100% as they battled to dominate possession.
Our passing and all round game improved in the second half. Max Rankin had an outstanding game up front. Max was always available for a pass, had a great first touch and brought the midfield into the game on several occasions.
Up an until the fourth and final quarter either team could have won, but the game swang in favour of the Raptors in the last 10 mins as we began to create more and more chances. Cormac Sims, Max Rankin and Jarvis Moore all had shots that went just wide of the post.
Finally Max Rankin scored the winning goal with four minutes left on the clock. Receiving a ball with his back to goal, Max flicked the ball around a defender with outside of his boot, dribbled around a prostrate goaly and then blasted the ball into the middle of an open goal.
The Raptors held on for another three nervy minutes to secure a hard fought win.
This was a rare clean sheet for the Raptors, so special mention has to go Hayden Elliot and Aaron Lear who did not put a foot wrong all game and were very solid in defence. Billy Hall had another composed game between the posts.
Man of the match went to Cormac Sims who must have run 5km in centre midfield, never lost a challenge (often against boys twice his size) and played some neat through balls to the striker.
Managers and parents were very proud of the boys fighting spirit today.
